"Mother" Whiteside was a midwife in Grants who helped deliver more than 450 babies, and owner of the Whiteside Hotel and Café to 1952.
Date of birth:  May 3, 1871 in Missouri
Date of death:  May 12, 1958 (age 87) in Glendale, California, from unstated natural causes
Buries at Hillcrest Cemetery, Gallup, NM to lay in rest beside her daughter

The town of Grants honored "Mother" Whiteside by naming its public library after her, dedicated November 21, 1954.  When asked how long she had lived in Grants, she replied that she'd been there so long that Mount Taylor was no more than a little knoll when she first arrived.

Mother Whiteside was given a surprise birthday visit on May of 1953. Not only does the article state the Masonic Lodge built her a small hotel after the death of her husband, it goes on to say this hotel ran until 1952 when it was rebuilt to become the Cactus Inn!
At the end of this article from May 9, 1953 Gallup Independent, it says she was coy about her age. This has made following her on ancestry quite difficult. Most often it is stated she was born in 1876, sometimes 1882; but her death record states 1871, but the place of birth is wrong. I guess we will never know her true age.
